Indianapolis, Indiana – Drivers along and northeast of I-74 should prepare now for light snow that could begin late Sunday and continue into Monday, creating slick stretches before the morning commute.
According to the National Weather Service in Indianapolis, cooler air will hold across central Indiana through the weekend, with isolated sprinkles possible Saturday before a more organized chance of light snow arrives Sunday night into Monday. While widespread heavy accumulation is not expected, light totals are possible primarily along and northeast of I-74, including areas near Muncie, Anderson and Lafayette.
Overnight lows will dip into the mid-20s to upper 20s tonight, allowing untreated pavement to refreeze. Highs Saturday will reach the upper 30s to mid-40s under partly cloudy skies. By Sunday, temperatures fall back into the upper 20s to lower 30s, setting the stage for snow to accumulate on colder surfaces.
Light snow could develop after sunset Sunday, with minor accumulations of up to 1 to 2 inches possible in localized bands, especially north and east of Indianapolis. Roads such as I-69, I-65 and I-74 may become briefly snow-covered if steadier snow develops overnight.
Motorists should monitor road conditions late Sunday, reduce speeds on bridges and overpasses and allow extra travel time Monday morning. Additional advisories may be issued if snowfall trends increase or temperatures fall faster than expected.
