Indianapolis, Indiana – Drivers across central Indiana should prepare for another surge of heavy rain late this afternoon through early Thursday, with up to 2 inches expected and localized flooding possible along Interstates 65 and 70.

According to the National Weather Service in Indianapolis, rain will briefly taper midday before redeveloping late this afternoon and continuing through the overnight hours. A couple additional inches of rainfall are possible, especially across southern counties. Storms may also produce isolated hail and damaging wind gusts approaching 60 mph, mainly south of Indianapolis.

The heaviest rain is expected from Bloomington through Columbus and toward Seymour, where repeated downpours could lead to rapid water rises in low-lying areas. Along I-65 south of downtown and I-70 toward Terre Haute, ponding water may reduce traction and slow the evening commute. Drivers on I-69 near Muncie and Anderson could encounter brief visibility drops during heavier bursts.

While widespread river flooding is not guaranteed, urban and small stream flooding becomes more likely if rainfall rates intensify overnight. Officials urge motorists to avoid water-covered roads and allow extra braking distance on slick pavement.

Rain chances remain elevated through early Thursday morning before gradually decreasing. Additional Flood Advisories or Severe Thunderstorm Warnings may be issued with little notice if heavier bands set up across central Indiana.
