Indianapolis, Indiana – A narrow band of accumulating snow is expected to impact parts of central Indiana late tonight into Tuesday morning, potentially creating slick roads and reduced visibility along major travel routes.
According to the National Weather Service in Indianapolis, snow will develop late tonight and persist into Tuesday, with southeastern portions of central Indiana having the best chance of seeing 1 to 2 inches of accumulation. Forecasters note that uncertainty remains regarding the exact placement of the heaviest snow band.
Areas near and southeast of Indianapolis, including communities along I-65, I-70 and I-74, could experience brief periods of snow-covered roads, especially during the overnight hours and early Tuesday morning commute. Even small shifts in the snow band could change which locations receive the highest totals.
The National Weather Service cautioned that the snow may lead to lowered visibility and difficult driving conditions, particularly in spots where snowfall rates briefly increase. Bridges, overpasses and untreated roadways may become slick as temperatures remain cold enough for snow to accumulate.
While snowfall totals are not expected to be widespread or heavy, the narrow nature of the snow band increases the risk for localized impacts. Some areas may receive little to no accumulation, while nearby locations could see enough snow to slow traffic and increase crash risk.
Drivers are encouraged to monitor updated forecasts overnight and allow extra travel time Tuesday morning, especially in southeastern sections of central Indiana. Conditions could change quickly depending on the exact track of the snow band.
The National Weather Service emphasized continuing to monitor updates as forecast confidence increases closer to the event.
