Indianapolis, Indiana – Light to locally moderate snow is moving east across central Indiana Friday morning, creating slick roads and slowing travel across the region.
According to the National Weather Service in Indianapolis, snow has already partially covered some roadways, particularly southeast of the Indianapolis metro area. Snowfall amounts through the morning are generally expected to remain below one-half inch, though brief heavier bursts may lead to short-term accumulation and reduced visibility.
Winds of 10 to 15 mph are contributing to areas of blowing snow, especially on open roadways and elevated surfaces. Motorists should be prepared for slow travel conditions during the morning commute, with visibility changing quickly at times.
The National Weather Service reports that additional snow is likely this afternoon and evening, with brief periods of heavier snow possible. While widespread significant accumulation is not expected, intermittent snow bursts could again reduce visibility and create localized slick spots.
Traffic camera images from I-74 near Shelbyville and I-465 on the south side of Indianapolis show snow-covered lanes and wet pavement early Friday, reinforcing the potential for delays during peak travel periods.
Drivers are urged to reduce speed, allow extra stopping distance, and monitor updated road conditions before traveling. Conditions may vary significantly over short distances, especially as snow bands shift through the area.
For commuters, even minor accumulations may impact travel times due to untreated roads and fluctuating visibility during heavier snow bursts.
