Indianapolis, Indiana – Snow showers today across central Indiana will be followed by a sharp drop in temperatures this weekend, with sub-zero wind chills expected multiple mornings, according to the National Weather Service in Indianapolis.
Forecasters said several rounds of snow showers will move through the region today and tonight. Snow amounts are expected to remain generally under 1 inch, with up to a half-inch possible this morning and additional bursts later this evening. Coverage will be greatest across north and central Indiana, while southern Indiana may see periods of rain mixing in at times.
Despite limited accumulation, the National Weather Service warned that slick and snow-covered roads are possible through tonight, especially during heavier snow bursts and after sunset when temperatures fall.
Behind the snow, much colder air arrives Saturday, marking the start of a prolonged cold stretch. Wind chills are forecast to drop to −5° to −10°F Sunday night, with similarly cold conditions expected again Monday night. Some areas of northern Indiana may experience the coldest wind chills, while southern portions remain slightly less extreme.
Officials urged residents to prepare now for the cold by limiting outdoor exposure, dressing in layers, and ensuring vehicles are winter-ready. Frostbite can occur on exposed skin in a short amount of time under these conditions.
Drivers should allow extra travel time today and tonight and stay alert for rapidly changing road conditions as snow showers move through central Indiana.
