Indianapolis, IN – A 5-month-old kitten is safe and recovering after Indianapolis Fire Department (IFD) firefighters and veterinary staff worked together Monday afternoon to free her from a heavy steel grate at a south side gas station.

According to the Indianapolis Fire Department, crews responded around 1:30 p.m. to the intersection of Emerson Avenue and Thompson Road after a bystander spotted the kitten trapped in the grate. Initial attempts to free the animal were unsuccessful, prompting firefighters to transport her to Noah’s Stop 11 Animal Hospital Veterinary Specialty & Emergency Care South for additional assistance.

Veterinary staff sedated the kitten while IFD personnel carefully removed her from the metal grate. The joint rescue effort took about 20 minutes, and officials confirmed the kitten suffered no injuries.

The kitten is now under the care of veterinary specialists and is expected to make a full recovery. According to IFD, the animal hospital frequently partners with firefighters to assist in emergency animal rescues and post-incident care.

The department praised the teamwork that led to the successful outcome and noted that the young cat will soon be available for adoption once she fully recovers.
