Indianapolis, IN – A 23-year-old Indianapolis man has been arrested in Chicago in connection with the death of a 2-year-old girl, police announced Friday.
According to the Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department (IMPD), detectives worked with the U.S. Marshals Service and the Chicago Police Department to apprehend Leon’ta Anderson on Thursday. He is accused in the death of 2-year-old Harmoney Anderson and faces a charge of neglect of a dependent resulting in death.
Police said officers were first called to Methodist Hospital on July 11, when Harmoney was brought in with gunshot-related injuries and later pronounced dead. Detectives determined the child’s injuries occurred at a residence in the 2000 block of Ralston Avenue. After serving search warrants, police reported seizing multiple firearms from the home. Two individuals initially detained at the hospital were later released following consultation with the Marion County Prosecutor’s Office.
IMPD homicide detectives continued their investigation and, after reviewing evidence, presented the case again to prosecutors. On August 20, a warrant was issued for Anderson’s arrest. Police allege he fled Indianapolis for Chicago, where investigators tracked him down with the help of the U.S. Marshals Service.
Authorities said Anderson was taken into custody on Thursday, August 28, without incident. He will be extradited to Indianapolis to face charges.
Police emphasized that an arrest is not a conviction and that Anderson should be considered innocent unless proven guilty in court.
