Indianapolis, IN – A 64-year-old woman was rescued unconscious from her burning apartment on the city’s northeast side Thursday morning, authorities said.

According to the Indianapolis Fire Department, crews were dispatched around 10:25 a.m. to 8575 Sedona Ridge Lane, where they found the apartment filled with heavy black smoke, zero visibility and an active smoldering fire that had already caused extensive interior damage.

Firefighters located the woman inside and carried her outside, where advanced life support care and CPR were immediately started. She was transported in critical condition to Eskenazi Hospital.

Two cats reportedly died in the fire. Investigators determined the blaze started from an overloaded power strip positioned near a couch inside the apartment.

Images released by the fire department showed significant fire damage to the interior, including a charred couch and smoke-stained walls. The exterior of the two-story apartment building appeared intact.

The Indianapolis Fire Department urged residents to avoid overloading electrical outlets and power strips, which can quickly become fire hazards if too many devices are plugged in.

No other injuries were reported, and the department did not indicate whether neighboring units were affected. The woman’s current condition has not been updated.
