Indianapolis, IN – The Indianapolis Fire Department is mourning the loss of Battalion Chief Barry K. Riddle, a respected leader and veteran firefighter who dedicated nearly four decades to fire service before passing away on December 27, 2025, at the age of 62.

According to the Indianapolis Fire Department, Riddle was appointed on February 25, 1986, after previously serving five years as a volunteer firefighter with the Pittsboro Fire Department, beginning at just 18 years old. His first assignment out of recruit school was Engine 16 C shift, followed by a long tenure with Engine 18, where he spent more than 13 years.

Riddle was promoted to Lieutenant in 2002, Captain in 2008, and Battalion Chief in July 2022. His final assignment was Battalion 04 C shift at Fire Station 43, where he was serving at the time of his death. Colleagues remember him for his extensive overtime work, steady leadership, and commitment to firefighter safety.

Visitation will be held Monday, January 5, from 4 p.m. to 8 p.m., with an additional calling Tuesday, January 6, from 11 a.m. to noon, followed by funeral services at 12 p.m., all at Flanner Buchanan Washington Park East Funeral Home. A drive-by will take place at IFD Station 43.

Outside the firehouse, Riddle enjoyed hiking across the U.S., including long treks on the Appalachian Trail, collecting baseball memorabilia, and cheering for the Cincinnati Reds. He is remembered most for his devotion to family, especially his grandson.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to two funds established in his honor.
