Indianapolis, IN – An early morning fire displaced several families Tuesday after flames tore through multiple homes on North Delaware Street, according to the Indianapolis Fire Department (IFD). The blaze began around 5:41 AM inside a two-and-a-half-story unoccupied structure at 2956 N. Delaware St., spreading quickly to neighboring residences before firefighters brought it under control.
According to IFD, firefighters contained the blaze within 45 minutes, preventing further loss to two nearby occupied homes. The main structure, however, was deemed a total loss and partially collapsed during the response. No injuries were reported among residents or firefighters.
Investigators requested the IFD Collapse Rescue Team to help remove nearly three feet of water from the basement for a full search. Officials say the home where the fire started had no active utilities and was owned by a family since 1981. A woman familiar with the property told fire officials her grandfather owns the home and she was preparing to move in.
Neighbors reported that squatters had been in and out of the structure before the fire. The IFD Victims Assistance Unit and the Red Cross are working together to provide shelter for displaced residents.
The cause of the fire remains under investigation.
