Indianapolis, IN – Fifteen residents, including eight adults and seven children, were displaced Saturday afternoon after a fire broke out in an apartment complex at 4249 David St., near 42nd Street and Shadeland Avenue.

According to the Indianapolis Fire Department (IFD), crews arrived around 3:20 p.m. to find heavy flames coming from the rear of a second-floor apartment. Firefighters from both IFD and the City of Lawrence Fire Department launched an aggressive attack to prevent the blaze from spreading further. The fire was brought under control within 30 minutes.

Officials said the fire began in an attached storage unit and spread into multiple apartments and attic space. Fortunately, no injuries were reported, but one cat was found deceased, and three others remain unaccounted for. Two apartments were significantly damaged by fire, while four more sustained smoke and water damage.

The occupants told investigators they had been out of town for the holidays and were unsure what could have sparked the blaze. The IFD Victims Assistance unit and the Red Cross are helping displaced residents with temporary shelter.

The cause of the fire remains under investigation.
