An 84-year-old woman is in critical condition after Indianapolis Fire Department (IFD) crews rescued her from a burning home early Tuesday morning.

According to IFD, multiple 911 callers reported seeing a fire but could not provide an exact address. Firefighters searched multiple locations before finding the blaze on Windridge Drive. By the time crews arrived, the house was 80% engulfed in flames, with heavy fire pushing through the roof.

Firefighters from Squad 10 forced entry through a rear window using a Halligan tool. Within a minute, they located the woman unconscious on her bed. She was removed through the same window and transported to Eskenazi Hospital for advanced life support care.

Officials noted that the woman’s closed bedroom door helped limit smoke exposure. However, intense flames in the attic caused the roof to collapse just minutes after she was rescued. No other occupants were in the home, though one cat perished in the fire.

The cause of the fire remains under investigation.
