Indianapolis, IN – Drivers across central and north central Indiana could face dangerous travel conditions late tonight as dense fog spreads across the region, sharply reducing visibility during one of the busiest holiday travel periods.
According to the National Weather Service in Indianapolis, a Dense Fog Advisory is in effect from 10 p.m. tonight through 11 a.m. Christmas morning for much of north central and central Indiana. Visibility could drop to a quarter mile or less, with locally worse conditions at times. Forecasters also warn that areas south of the advisory could still see pockets of dense fog develop overnight.
The greatest impacts are expected along major corridors including I-65, I-69, I-70, and portions of U.S. 31 and U.S. 52. Cities such as Lafayette, Kokomo, Muncie, Crawfordsville, and parts of the Indianapolis metro may see rapid changes in visibility, especially late tonight and around daybreak.
Officials urge drivers to slow down, use low-beam headlights, and allow extra following distance. Sudden slowdowns and reduced reaction time increase the risk of crashes in dense fog, particularly before sunrise.
Fog is expected to gradually lift late Christmas morning, though lingering low visibility could persist longer in rural areas. Additional advisories remain possible if conditions fail to improve as expected.
