Indianapolis, IN – A family of three was displaced but escaped without injury Sunday evening after a pickup truck crashed through the back wall of their Indianapolis apartment, according to the Indianapolis Fire Department (IFD). The incident happened around 7:40 p.m. at 7076 Portland Square, where responders found extensive structural damage and debris throughout the kitchen area.
According to fire officials, the vehicle barreled into the apartment from the rear, breaching the wall and entering directly into the kitchen. Fortunately, none of the residents were in that part of the home at the time of impact. Crews say the driver sustained minor injuries and was transported to Eskenazi Hospital for evaluation.
The Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department (IMPD) is investigating the cause of the crash, including what led the driver off the roadway and into the residential complex.
IFD’s Collapse Rescue Team was dispatched to assess the safety and stability of the structure. After evaluating the damage, the team determined that no emergency shoring was required, though the unit remains uninhabitable until repairs can be made.
Photos released by IFD show significant damage, including a destroyed kitchen, collapsed interior walls, shattered framing, and debris spread across multiple rooms. Exterior images show the truck lodged deep within the back side of the apartment building.
The family is now working with apartment management to secure temporary shelter and additional support services.
Officials praised the quick response of fire and rescue crews, noting that the outcome could have been far more severe had anyone been standing in the kitchen at the time of impact. Additional updates on the investigation are expected from IMPD.
