Indianapolis, IN – Rain showers early Wednesday are expected to transition to snow by afternoon as temperatures drop sharply through the 30s, according to the National Weather Service (NWS) Indianapolis. Forecasters warn of potentially slick roads and icy surfaces by late day, especially on bridges and untreated surfaces.

The cold front moving through Indiana will bring afternoon highs near 40°F, but readings will quickly fall into the 20s by evening, turning remaining rain into light snow. Accumulating snow is expected Thursday night into Friday, with totals of 1 to 2 inches possible across central and northern portions of the state.

The NWS says the transition could make the Wednesday evening commute hazardous, particularly along the I-65 and I-70 corridors. Drivers are encouraged to slow down, allow extra travel time, and remain alert for patches of black ice as temperatures plunge overnight.

Looking ahead, forecasters call for bitter cold this weekend, with highs struggling to reach the 20s and lows in the single digits. Wind chills could drop below zero at times, adding another layer of caution for residents venturing outdoors.

Officials recommend preparing vehicles for winter conditions and monitoring local updates for any travel advisories through the end of the week.
