Indianapolis, Indiana – Central Indiana is under a prolonged heat advisory through 8 p.m. Tuesday, with heat index values expected to climb into the low 100s each afternoon — the highest so far this summer.
According to the National Weather Service in Indianapolis, the advisory begins Saturday at 1 p.m. and includes counties from Lafayette to Bloomington and as far east as Muncie and Richmond. Nighttime temperatures will offer little relief, with elevated humidity keeping overnight lows oppressive.
Marion, Hamilton, Monroe, Tippecanoe, and surrounding counties will be hardest hit. Outdoor workers, children, the elderly, and anyone without access to air conditioning face a heightened risk of heat-related illness. Emergency managers urge residents to limit strenuous outdoor activity, check on vulnerable neighbors, and stay hydrated.
Local cooling centers in cities like Terre Haute, Columbus, and Kokomo will remain open throughout the advisory period. Residents should wear light, breathable clothing and know the signs of heat exhaustion — dizziness, nausea, and confusion — which can progress rapidly in extreme conditions.
