Rensselaer, IN – A 71-year-old Rensselaer man was found dead in his home, leading to the arrest of his estranged wife on murder charges.

Officers responded to a residence on Milroy Avenue after Phil Nagel failed to attend planned events. A concerned neighbor contacted police, who entered the home and discovered his body.

Investigators determined Nagel had died from a gunshot wound. The Jasper County Coroner confirmed his death, and authorities launched a murder investigation. Evidence from the scene led police to focus on his estranged wife, Stephanie Nagel. A search warrant for her home uncovered additional evidence.

During questioning, Stephanie Nagel provided inconsistent statements and later stopped cooperating. She was arrested and booked into Jasper County Jail. Prosecutors charged her with murder, burglary (Level 1 felony), and stalking (Level 4 felony).

Authorities urge anyone with information to call 219-866-7602. Anonymous tips are welcome.
