Crown Point, IN – A Winter Storm Warning is now in effect for Lake and Porter Counties in northwest Indiana, where intense lake effect snow is expected to begin late Sunday night and continue through 6 p.m. Monday, according to the Lake County Homeland Security and Emergency Management Agency.
Forecasters warn of snow rates exceeding 3 inches per hour at times, with localized totals between 8 and 12 inches possible. Strong north winds gusting over 30 mph will cause whiteout conditions, especially near the Lake Michigan shoreline, making travel extremely hazardous.
Periods of thundersnow are also possible within the heaviest snow bands. Officials caution that conditions will vary sharply over short distances — with clear skies in one area and near-zero visibility just a few miles away.
Travel is strongly discouraged tonight and Monday, especially along Interstates 80, 90, and 94, where heavy snow and gusty winds could cause rapid deterioration of road conditions.
