Indianapolis, IN – As a surge of Arctic air and light snow sweep across Indiana this month, transportation officials are warning drivers in Indianapolis, Fort Wayne, and Evansville to use caution as bridges and overpasses begin icing over faster than surrounding roadways.
According to the National Weather Service (NWS), bridges freeze first because they’re surrounded by cold air on all sides. This exposure causes them to lose heat rapidly, allowing surface ice to form even when air temperatures hover slightly above freezing. “It’s one of the most deceptive winter hazards,” the NWS said Friday.
The Indiana Department of Transportation (INDOT) has begun pre-treating major interstates including I-65, I-70, and I-69, applying brine and salt to elevated bridges, ramps, and curves ahead of an overnight freeze.
Motorists are advised to slow down before crossing bridges, maintain steady speed over icy spans, and avoid sudden braking or lane changes. Officials warn that black ice — a thin, transparent layer of frozen moisture — is nearly invisible under streetlights and can cause vehicles to lose traction instantly.
Travelers can monitor real-time road and weather conditions via 511in.org or by following @INDOT for statewide winter alerts.
