Indianapolis, IN — A developing winter system is expected to bring moderate to significant snowfall to central Indiana today, with the heaviest impacts focused along and north of Interstate 70. The National Weather Service in Indianapolis reports that snow will expand through the morning, becoming heavier by afternoon and early evening.
Areas north of I-70 are expected to see the greatest snowfall totals, with 2 to 5 inches possible depending on location. Some locations closer to the Indiana–Michigan border could see even higher localized amounts. Meanwhile, areas south of I-70 will see lighter accumulations as warmer air begins to move in later today.
Forecasters warn that the most intense snowfall rates are likely between 1 p.m. and 7 p.m., which could quickly cover roadways and reduce visibility for drivers heading out for weekend travel.
As the system continues eastward, snow will gradually mix with and change over to rain from south to north during the evening and overnight hours. This transition will help limit snow totals in the southern half of the region but may create a period of slush and wet road conditions.
A strong cold front will sweep through late tonight, dropping temperatures rapidly into early Sunday. Any lingering water or slush on untreated roads and sidewalks may refreeze, creating slick travel conditions for early morning drivers.
The NWS highlights that travel could be difficult to hazardous today and tonight, especially north of I-70 where snowfall is expected to be most persistent.
