Indianapolis, Indiana – Strong thunderstorms are expected to return to Central Indiana starting Friday, threatening weekend travel and outdoor Father’s Day plans. The National Weather Service warns that heavy rainfall, lightning, and localized flooding are likely — particularly along the I-70 and I-65 corridors between Indianapolis, Terre Haute, and Richmond.

According to the National Weather Service in Indianapolis, storms will begin Friday between 11 a.m. and 1 p.m., with the most intense activity likely Friday evening and again Saturday. A few storms could become strong, bringing gusty winds and small hail. Rainfall totals could exceed a quarter inch Friday and Saturday, increasing flood potential in low-lying areas and near streams, especially in the Wabash River Valley.

Residents in Marion, Hamilton, Tippecanoe, and Monroe counties should stay alert through Sunday night as rain chances remain elevated. Father’s Day Sunday will bring a 50% chance of showers and storms, mostly after 11 a.m. Those attending outdoor events or traveling should prepare for changing weather and have backup indoor plans.

Spotter activation is not anticipated, but conditions could change if storms strengthen.
