INDIANAPOLIS, Indiana – With Thanksgiving travel just weeks away, Indiana officials are urging drivers to prepare vehicles now for winter conditions and holiday traffic. From Indianapolis to Fort Wayne, state agencies are reminding motorists that early maintenance and planning can prevent breakdowns and ensure safer travel once cold weather and snow arrive later this month.

According to the Indiana Department of Transportation, November is the best time to inspect tires, test batteries, and replace wiper blades before freezing temperatures return. Drivers are also advised to keep a basic winter emergency kit — including a blanket, flashlight, jumper cables, bottled water, snacks, and traction materials such as sand or kitty litter.

Motorists using I-65, I-70, and I-69 for Thanksgiving travel should expect congestion and changing weather across the state’s plains and northern snow belt. “Indiana’s winter can shift quickly — from rain to snow in a few hours,” an INDOT spokesperson said. “A prepared vehicle and some planning can save time and keep your trip safe.” Officials also recommend keeping gas tanks at least half full, dressing warmly, and checking 511in.org for real-time traffic and weather conditions.

With Thanksgiving marking one of the busiest travel periods of the year, INDOT urges all drivers to perform maintenance now and stay alert on the roads as Indiana transitions into the winter driving season.
