Indianapolis, IN – Bitter Arctic air continues to grip Indiana, with the National Weather Service warning residents that dangerously cold wind chills will persist through Tuesday morning across much of the state.

According to the National Weather Service in Indianapolis, a Cold Weather Advisory remains in effect until 9 a.m. EST Tuesday for large portions of central, north-central, east-central, and west-central Indiana. Wind chills are expected to fall as low as 14 degrees below zero, creating hazardous conditions for anyone spending time outdoors.

The advisory impacts numerous counties and communities, including Indianapolis, Carmel, Fishers, Greenwood, Lafayette, Kokomo, Muncie, Anderson, Terre Haute, Martinsville, Franklin, Brownsburg, Noblesville, and Plainfield. In Shelby and Rush counties, wind chills may reach 9 below zero, while parts of southern Indiana, including Greene, Knox, and Sullivan counties, remain under an advisory through late Monday morning.

Meteorologists warn that prolonged exposure to these temperatures can lead to hypothermia, especially without proper winter clothing. Frostbite is also a concern during the coldest overnight and early-morning hours.

Officials urge residents to limit time outdoors, wear layered clothing, hats, and gloves, and ensure pets are kept indoors. Extra caution is advised when using space heaters, and residents are reminded never to use grills or generators inside the home due to carbon monoxide risks.

Emergency officials also recommend checking on elderly neighbors, family members, and anyone without reliable heating as the cold persists.

Temperatures are expected to gradually moderate later Tuesday, but dangerous conditions will remain possible until then. Residents should continue monitoring local forecasts and follow all weather advisories.
