South Bend, Indiana – Below-freezing temperatures and passing weather systems will bring multiple chances for light snow across northern Indiana through Thursday morning, with minor accumulations possible.
According to the National Weather Service Northern Indiana, the first round of snow is expected this evening into Wednesday morning, followed by another opportunity for snow Wednesday afternoon through early Thursday. Snowfall amounts are expected to be light, but repeated rounds could lead to slick travel conditions.
Forecast snowfall totals from the first system generally range from a dusting to around 1 inch, with locally higher amounts possible. The second system carries a moderate probability of producing up to 2 inches of snow, especially across northwest Indiana, including areas near South Bend, Valparaiso, and Elkhart.
Probability guidance from the National Weather Service shows a 30 to 60 percent chance of 2 inches of snow in parts of far northern Indiana near the Michigan border, while chances decrease farther south toward Fort Wayne, Marion, and Peru, where probabilities remain low.
Temperatures are expected to stay below freezing through Thursday morning, allowing snow to accumulate on untreated roads, bridges, and overpasses. While snowfall rates are not expected to be heavy, even light snow could result in slick spots during overnight and early morning travel.
Dry weather is expected to return later Thursday and continue into the weekend, though cold conditions will persist. Motorists are encouraged to use caution during periods of snowfall, reduce speeds, and allow extra travel time, particularly during the Wednesday morning and Thursday morning commutes.
Residents should continue to monitor forecast updates as small changes in storm track or timing could affect snowfall amounts across the region.
