Indiana wakes up under a gray, damp sky as fog curls around streetlights and wet pavement shines before sunrise. Visibility drops quickly in spots, and the air feels heavy enough to slow the morning drive. This first full weekend of winter arrives quietly, but changes are already lining up that could complicate holiday and New Year’s travel.

According to the National Weather Service in Indianapolis, areas of locally dense fog early today may reduce visibility to around a half mile before lifting north through the morning. Light drizzle and mist linger, keeping roads slick across central Indiana, including Indianapolis, Lafayette, Bloomington, and Kokomo.

Conditions calm briefly heading into Saturday, though clouds remain stubborn. By Saturday night into Sunday, a stronger system moves in with widespread rain and embedded thunderstorms. Gusty southwest winds could exceed 25 mph at times, especially Sunday afternoon and evening. Ponding on roads and reduced visibility may slow travel on I-65, I-70, and I-74 during peak return traffic.

Colder air follows quickly. Rain may mix with or change to snow Sunday night into Monday as temperatures drop toward freezing. While significant accumulation is not guaranteed, even light snow or slush could trigger flash freezing on untreated roads early Monday. Drivers should plan extra time and watch bridges and overpasses closely.

Looking ahead to New Year’s week, colder air settles in with brisk winds and seasonable chill. Another weak system midweek could bring light snow chances near New Year’s Eve, keeping winter weather concerns in play as 2026 begins.
