Indiana – Headlights glow like halos in the gray this morning as fog presses low across highways and neighborhoods. Moist air hugs the ground, swallowing taillights and shrinking visibility just when Christmas travel ramps up.
The National Weather Service in Indianapolis has issued a Dense Fog Advisory until 11 a.m., covering much of central and northern Indiana. Visibility has dropped below a quarter mile in spots, especially near and north of I-70, where travel conditions can change quickly. Southern counties may also see pockets of fog, though coverage is more uneven.
Drivers heading out early should slow down and leave extra space. Fog thickens without warning near rivers, low-lying roads, and open farmland. Reduced visibility remains the primary hazard through mid-morning before gradual improvement sets in.
Despite the fog, temperatures stay unusually mild for late December. Highs climb toward 50 degrees today, with readings rising into the 60s by Friday and Sunday. The warmth keeps snow and ice off the roads for now, but it also supports more fog development tonight into early Friday. Another round of reduced visibility is possible after sunset.
Looking ahead, the weekend stays mild and mostly quiet. Clouds linger at times, but widespread rain is not expected. Travelers returning home after Christmas should remain alert during early morning and late-night hours, when fog is most likely to redevelop.
By early next week, temperatures trend cooler again, hinting at a gradual return to more seasonable winter weather. No major winter storms are indicated yet, but colder mornings could change road conditions quickly if moisture remains.
