Wind cuts through layers and stings exposed skin across central Indiana this morning. Sidewalks crunch, breath hangs in the air, and even short trips outside feel punishing as winter shows its teeth.

Indiana is under a Cold Weather Advisory as an Arctic air mass settles firmly over the region. According to the National Weather Service in Indianapolis, wind chills are dropping to 10 to 20 degrees below zero early today, with scattered flurries and light snow showers possible, mainly during the morning hours. The advisory remains in effect through mid-morning.

In Indianapolis, temperatures sit near 6 degrees, but northwest winds drive wind chills closer to minus 15. Brief snow showers may dust roads, especially on untreated surfaces. Drivers along I-65, I-70, and I-465 should watch for slick patches, particularly on bridges and ramps where flash freezing can occur quickly.

Conditions ease slightly later today, but the cold does not fully let go. Tonight brings another sharp drop, with wind chills again approaching 10 below zero. Frostbite can occur quickly without proper protection. Limit time outside, cover exposed skin, and check on vulnerable neighbors.

Looking ahead, the pattern stays active into early February. Light snow is possible Monday, followed by a better chance for accumulating snow Monday night into Tuesday as another disturbance moves through. While amounts remain uncertain, even light snow can snarl travel when temperatures stay well below freezing.

Farther out, longer-range outlooks suggest continued cold across the Midwest as warmer air builds across the western United States. February opens with winter firmly in control for Indiana.

More advisories may follow as snow chances increase. How cold did it feel stepping outside where you live this morning?
