Indianapolis, IN – A sharp drop in temperatures is expected to sweep across much of Indiana late Monday, prompting a Freeze Watch that could impact gardens, agriculture, and daily routines.

According to the National Weather Service in Indianapolis, sub-freezing temperatures as low as 23°F are forecast from late Monday night through Tuesday morning, with the watch in effect from 1 a.m. to 10 a.m. EDT Tuesday. The alert covers a wide portion of the state, including cities such as Indianapolis, Lafayette, Bloomington, Terre Haute, Muncie, and Columbus.

Sensitive vegetation and early-season crops may suffer damage or be killed if not properly protected. Residents are encouraged to take precautionary measures now, including covering or bringing indoors tender plants.

Historically, April freezes are not uncommon in Indiana, but temperatures in the low 20s pose elevated risks, especially following recent milder weather.

Counties affected span central, north central, east central, south central, and southwest Indiana. The cold air mass moving in is expected to be brief but severe, with normal April lows typically ranging from 35°F to 42°F across the state.

Local agricultural agencies and extension offices advise farmers and gardeners to monitor temperatures closely and prepare frost mitigation methods.

More updates will be issued if conditions change.
