INDIANAPOLIS — As Hoosiers prepare to hit the road after the holiday, state troopers are urging drivers to plan ahead and stay alert with snow and falling temperatures expected this weekend.
The Indiana State Police Lafayette District is reminding travelers that post-Thanksgiving traffic and winter weather can combine for dangerous road conditions, especially as a snow system develops late Saturday into Sunday.
Officials say road conditions could deteriorate quickly, particularly on interstates and rural routes, where blowing snow and ice can reduce visibility. Drivers are urged to check current conditions through the Indiana Department of Transportation (INDOT) Trafficwise system or call 1-800-261-ROAD (7623) before heading out.
Troopers advise giving yourself extra time, slowing down, and increasing following distance. All snow and ice should be cleared from vehicles before driving, and phones should stay down while eyes remain forward.
“Buckle up — every seat, every trip,” officials reminded drivers in Friday’s message. “Our troopers will be working to keep roads safe, but we need your help too.”
As temperatures drop and snow spreads across parts of the state, officials stress patience and preparation as the best defense against accidents. If travel isn’t essential during peak snowfall, residents are encouraged to delay plans until conditions improve.
