Indianapolis, IN – A cold, gray start to the week will give way to a messy midweek system, with snow and rain returning to central Indiana by Wednesday. After a calm and chilly Tuesday, residents should brace for a sharp weather shift — one that could impact both commutes and travel plans heading into Thursday.
According to the National Weather Service, light rain is expected to develop Tuesday night and continue through early Wednesday. As colder air sweeps in, precipitation may transition to a rain–snow mix by afternoon, especially west and north of Indianapolis. Highs will hover near the low 40s Wednesday, but brisk southwest winds up to 30 mph could make it feel closer to freezing.
By Wednesday night, most of central Indiana will see temperatures drop into the mid-20s — cold enough for any lingering moisture to freeze on untreated roads. That means the potential for slick spots and early-season black ice during Thursday’s morning drive.
Thursday brings another 30% chance of snow as highs remain near 31°F, followed by a reinforcing shot of cold air into Friday. Forecasters warn that light accumulations of 1–3 inches are possible in spots, particularly north of I-70, with lake-effect snow showers extending into the weekend.
Looking ahead, a broader December cold snap is expected to grip much of the Midwest from Dec. 11–17, ushering in the coldest air of the season so far.
