Indianapolis, Indiana – Strong thunderstorms racing out of Illinois are set to bring damaging winds across Central Indiana this evening, putting residents from Lafayette to Indianapolis on alert for downed trees and power outages.
According to the National Weather Service in Indianapolis, the line of severe storms will reach far northwest counties just after 6:30 p.m., sweep through the Indy metro between 8:30 and 10 p.m., and move into southeastern counties after 11 p.m. The primary threat is damaging winds capable of knocking out power and causing hazardous travel, especially along I-65 and I-70 corridors.
Communities in Lafayette, Kokomo, and Noblesville should prepare for sudden wind gusts and possible flying debris. Indianapolis residents are urged to secure loose outdoor items and have multiple ways to receive warnings this evening. Travel could be dangerous during the storm’s passage, and power outages are possible across Marion and surrounding counties.
This is the region’s first significant severe wind event since spring. Emergency management officials recommend reviewing your safety plan and staying off roads during the strongest winds.
Thunderstorm warnings may continue through late tonight as storms push southeast. Stay tuned to local media and weather.gov/ind for new alerts or updates.
