Indianapolis, Indiana – Severe storms are expanding rapidly across Indiana this evening, with a Severe Thunderstorm Watch now covering more than 50 counties and millions of residents through midnight.
According to the Storm Prediction Center, Severe Thunderstorm Watch 76 includes a large portion of central, northern, and eastern Indiana, including Indianapolis (Marion County), Fort Wayne (Allen County), Lafayette (Tippecanoe County), and South Bend (St. Joseph County). Major travel corridors such as I-65, I-69, and I-70 are all within the watch area.
Storms developing this evening could produce wind gusts exceeding 60 mph and hail capable of damaging vehicles and property. The greatest threat will occur through late evening as storms organize into lines and move east across the state.
Cities including Muncie, Kokomo, Anderson, and Elkhart may see rapidly changing conditions, including heavy downpours and reduced visibility during peak travel hours.
Residents are urged to secure outdoor items and remain weather aware. Have multiple ways to receive warnings and be prepared for quick changes in conditions.
The severe threat will persist through midnight, with additional warnings likely as storms continue tracking across Indiana overnight.
