Indianapolis, IN — An unseasonable heat wave will sweep across Indiana starting today, bringing near-record temperatures and strong winds. The National Weather Service (NWS) forecasts highs reaching 82 degrees on Tuesday and 81 on Wednesday, nearing historic October records. Wind gusts up to 40 mph will create hazardous conditions, especially along major routes, potentially impacting both drivers and pedestrians.
According to the NWS, Tuesday’s 82-degree forecast in Indianapolis approaches the 1922 record of 81 degrees, while Wednesday could challenge the 1950 high of 82 degrees. With sustained winds between 14 and 16 mph and gusts up to 36 mph, residents are urged to secure outdoor objects and exercise caution on north-south corridors like I-65 and I-69.
While Indianapolis enjoys an unusually warm Halloween week, rain and cooler temperatures are on the horizon. Beginning late Wednesday night, there’s a 50% chance of showers, continuing into Thursday with thunderstorms likely after 8 a.m. Temperatures will drop to a high of 71 degrees on Thursday, accompanied by a noticeable cooldown to the mid-40s Thursday night.
By Friday, clear skies return, but temperatures dip further to a high of just 60 degrees. This weekend, residents should prepare for continued fall weather with Saturday’s high near 65 degrees and a chance of rain in the evening.
