Fort Wayne, IN – A late-season snow system brought measurable snowfall to parts of northern Indiana, with lingering flakes expected through mid-April in cities like Fort Wayne and South Bend.
According to the National Weather Service Northern Indiana, some areas saw trace amounts of snow yesterday, while locations near the Michigan border reported up to 3 inches. Hillsdale County, MI, just north of the Indiana state line, recorded the highest totals from a CoCoRaHS observer.
While unusual, this spring snow isn’t unprecedented. Historical data shows that the average last measurable snowfall in Fort Wayne occurs around April 1, with the latest recorded on May 10, 1945. South Bend typically sees its last flakes by April 3, but snow was recorded as late as May 11, 1966.
Drivers are advised to remain cautious during early morning hours, when temperatures may still dip below freezing, causing slick conditions. Local school districts have not reported any closures but urge parents to monitor potential weather-related delays.
Residents should keep winter gear accessible as brief snow chances may continue over the next week. While accumulation is likely minimal, roads and sidewalks could still be affected.
