Rensselaer, Indiana – Drivers in northwest Indiana are facing slick and hazardous road conditions early Thursday as lake effect snow continues to brush parts of Jasper County, creating problems during the morning commute.

According to the National Weather Service in Chicago, a Winter Weather Advisory remains in effect until 9 a.m. CST for northeast Jasper County. Bands of lake effect snow are producing localized hazardous travel, with additional snowfall up to one inch possible in the far northeastern portion of the county near the Porter County line.

The greatest concern is not total snowfall, but how quickly conditions can deteriorate. Roads, bridges, and overpasses around Rensselaer and DeMotte may become slick in a short amount of time, especially where snow briefly intensifies. Visibility can also change rapidly beneath narrow snow bands, catching drivers off guard on untreated roads.

Morning travel along U.S. 231, State Road 10, and nearby rural routes could be impacted, particularly on elevated surfaces and shaded stretches where snow and ice linger longer. Even light accumulations are enough to create icy patches in colder pavement conditions.

Motorists are urged to slow down, increase following distance, and use extra caution on bridges and ramps. Conditions are expected to improve later this morning as lake effect snow weakens and the advisory expires. However, slick spots may persist on less-traveled roads, and drivers should continue monitoring local road conditions through the Indiana 511 system.
