South Bend, Indiana – Drivers across northern Indiana and southwest Michigan could face dangerous winter travel starting Wednesday morning as heavy lake effect snow targets communities near Lake Michigan, bringing the potential for several inches of accumulation and strong winds.

According to the National Weather Service in Northern Indiana, a Winter Storm Watch is in effect from Wednesday morning through Thursday afternoon for Starke, Marshall, La Porte, and St. Joseph counties in Indiana, along with Berrien County in southwest Michigan. Snow totals between 4 and 9 inches are possible, with northwest wind gusts reaching 35 to 40 mph, especially near the lakeshore.

The combination of accumulating snow and strong winds may lead to blowing and drifting snow, particularly on east-west roads. Once bands become established, snowfall rates could intensify quickly, creating near whiteout conditions in the most persistent lake effect bands.

Travel impacts are expected during the Wednesday morning and evening commutes, with additional disruptions likely into Thursday morning. Roads in and around South Bend, Michigan City, La Porte, and Benton Harbor may become snow covered and slick with rapidly changing visibility.

Lake effect snow bands can be highly localized, meaning conditions may vary significantly over short distances. Motorists should be prepared for sudden drops in visibility and changing road conditions.

Officials urge residents to monitor forecast updates and consider delaying non-essential travel. Those who must drive should carry a winter emergency kit, allow extra time, and use caution, especially on secondary roads.

The snow threat is expected to persist through Thursday afternoon, with additional advisories or warnings possible as confidence in snowfall intensity and placement increases.
