Fort Wayne, Indiana – Heavy rain and evening thunderstorms threaten to soak northern Indiana from Wednesday afternoon through Friday, as warm and muggy conditions grip the state.

According to the National Weather Service in Northern Indiana, the most widespread showers and storms are expected Wednesday afternoon and evening, with locally heavy rainfall posing a risk for flash flooding. Scattered showers and storms may also return Thursday night—mainly south of US-24—and into Friday, especially west of US-31. Overnight lows will hover in the upper 60s, while daytime highs reach the mid-80s.

Cities including South Bend, Elkhart, and Fort Wayne should prepare for slick roads, possible ponding, and rapid changes in visibility during storms. School and evening events may be disrupted, and motorists should use caution during commutes. The NWS urges residents to keep phones charged, avoid flooded roadways, and monitor for possible weather alerts.

With high humidity and unstable air, even brief storms could produce downpours or gusty winds—similar to last summer’s July pattern. While not all areas will see rain each day, the window for heavier storms stretches into Friday evening.

Stay weather-aware as additional advisories may be issued. Updates will continue as conditions change through the week.
