Indianapolis, Indiana – Dangerous heat will grip much of Indiana today, with “feels like” temperatures pushing 108°F in cities from Lafayette to Columbus. The heat advisory spans over 30 counties and remains in effect until 8 p.m. EDT Thursday.
According to the National Weather Service in Indianapolis, two overlapping heat advisories are in place: one for the western half of the state that began overnight, and a second for central and eastern counties beginning at 11 a.m. Excessive humidity combined with actual highs in the mid-90s will create oppressive conditions across the state.
Cities under the advisory include Indianapolis, Bloomington, Terre Haute, Lafayette, Muncie, and Columbus. Road crews, delivery workers, and outdoor laborers are urged to hydrate frequently and take breaks in shaded or air-conditioned areas. Schools holding summer programs and camps are advised to limit outdoor activities.
Health officials recommend checking on elderly neighbors, limiting midday errands, and keeping pets indoors. Cooling centers are available in Marion, Tippecanoe, and Monroe counties.
The advisory expires at 8 p.m., but heat may linger through Friday with possible extension of warnings. Stay tuned to local alerts and consider rescheduling outdoor plans until cooler temperatures return.
