Indianapolis, Indiana – A blistering combo of extreme heat and late-day thunderstorms is set to grip Central Indiana on Tuesday, July 29, with serious risks for heat illness and flash flooding.
According to the National Weather Service in Indianapolis, a Heat Advisory remains in effect until 8 p.m. Tuesday. Afternoon heat index values between 105 and 110°F will make outdoor activity dangerous, especially in urban centers like Indianapolis, Bloomington, and Muncie. Residents should stay indoors, drink fluids, and check on vulnerable neighbors.
By mid-afternoon, scattered thunderstorms are likely to develop, particularly along the I-70 and I-65 corridors. While severe storms are not guaranteed, gusty winds, cloud-to-ground lightning, and localized flooding may accompany any cell that strengthens. Storms are expected to linger into Tuesday night, though impacts will be most felt between 3 p.m. and 9 p.m.. Commuters should use caution, especially near I-465 and U.S. 31.
Spotter activation is not expected, but NWS encourages reports of wind damage or flooding. Any strong storm could down trees or briefly knock out power.
