Indiana Weather Alert: Freezing Fog and Light Snow Risk Through Sunday

INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. – A bitter early December chill grips Indiana this morning, with icy air biting at windshields and a light frost coating open fields. Temperatures hover near the upper teens, and a wintry haze across northwest counties could leave slick patches on untreated roads before midmorning. Drivers should move cautiously, especially near rural intersections and bridges where ice forms first.

According to the National Weather Service in Indianapolis, patchy freezing fog will fade by late morning, giving way to mostly cloudy skies and highs in the low 30s. A weak system slides in from the Plains on Saturday, bringing a mix of snow showers and freezing rain potential late in the day. By Sunday morning, a quick-hitting band of snow could deliver up to an inch of accumulation across Marion, Boone, and Hendricks Counties, with reduced visibility on stretches of I-65 and I-70.

Cold air deepens behind the front Sunday night into Monday as wind chills drop into the single digits. Light snow or flurries may linger in northern counties, but the bigger concern will be refreezing moisture. Flash freezing could create slick conditions on secondary roads and driveways, especially before sunrise Monday.

Residents should plan for slower travel Sunday, keep extra layers handy, and protect outdoor pets and exposed pipes through early next week. Longer-range models hint at renewed lake-effect snow potential for the Great Lakes between December 11 and 17 — something to watch as holiday travel ramps up again.
