MARION, Ind. – More rain falling on already soaked parts of northern Indiana could flood roads, urban drainage areas and low-lying communities Wednesday afternoon through Thursday morning.

According to the National Weather Service Northern Indiana, a Flood Watch remains in effect through Thursday morning for 12 counties: Adams, Blackford, Cass, Fulton, Grant, Huntington, Jay, Miami, Pulaski, Wabash, Wells and White. The agency extended the watch Wednesday as additional rainfall threatened areas hit by recent heavy rain.

The biggest concern is excessive runoff. Additional water may drain quickly into rivers, creeks and streams, while poor-drainage areas could flood where water cannot escape fast enough.

Communities across the watch area include Marion and surrounding Grant County, along with areas around Huntington, Wabash, Peru, Bluffton, Portland, Logansport and Monticello. Conditions can vary considerably across the region depending on where additional rain falls.

Drivers should turn around when encountering a flooded roadway and avoid low spots where water can collect rapidly. Residents in flood-prone locations should monitor nearby waterways and keep weather alerts enabled overnight.

The Flood Watch continues through Thursday morning. Additional Flood Warnings could be issued if rainfall causes waterways or drainage systems to rise to hazardous levels.
