INDIANAPOLIS, Indiana – A calm, crisp hush has settled over central Indiana this Wednesday morning as the first true chill of late October takes hold. Clear skies and falling temperatures will pave the way for patchy frost by Thursday morning and possibly the season’s first hard freeze by early Friday. For Hoosiers, it’s the surest sign yet that late fall is tightening its grip.
According to the National Weather Service in Indianapolis, a Frost Advisory will likely be in effect for much of central and southern Indiana Thursday night into Friday morning. Temperatures are expected to dip into the low- to mid-30s, with sheltered rural spots briefly falling into the upper 20s. The agency warns that tender vegetation, gardens, and outdoor plumbing could be damaged without protection. Drivers should also expect frosty windshields during early commutes, especially north of I-70.
Winds will ease under mostly clear skies, allowing for strong radiational cooling. Thursday will stay bright and cool, with highs near 57°F and light breezes. Friday morning brings the coldest stretch of the week before sunshine returns, warming the area slightly into the upper 50s by afternoon.
By Saturday, clouds begin to build as a weak system tracks across the lower Midwest, bringing a slight chance of light showers Saturday night into Sunday. Despite the moisture, temperatures should moderate a bit—another window for yard cleanup or Halloween decorating before the next front approaches next week.
To be fair, no snow is in sight for Indiana just yet, but with this week’s frosty wake-up, winter’s first whisper feels closer than ever.
