Indianapolis, IN – Central Indiana residents are being urged to use caution outdoors today as the National Weather Service warns of an elevated fire weather risk across the region due to hot, dry, and breezy conditions.

According to the US National Weather Service in Indianapolis, afternoon highs are expected to range from 84 to 87 degrees, with wind gusts from the south between 15 and 25 mph and low humidity levels of 25–35% — a combination that increases the potential for wildfires to spread quickly.

Residents in Central and North Central Indiana are advised to avoid burning debris and to follow all local burn bans, which can be checked at in.gov/dhs/burn-ban-map. Officials also remind people not to discard cigarettes or matches outdoors and to use care with machinery that could spark.

No red flag warnings have been issued as of this morning, but conditions are expected to remain dry through the afternoon, keeping the fire danger elevated across much of the state.
