Lake Village, IN – A weak tornado briefly touched down in Newton County Sunday afternoon, carving a six-mile path near Lake Village but causing no reported injuries.

According to the National Weather Service in Chicago, the EF-0 tornado struck on March 30 between 2:28 and 2:33 p.m. CDT. The storm developed near W 600 N, approximately two miles west of U.S. Route 41, and traveled northeast, snapping trees and damaging limbs before lifting north of State Road 10 and N 75 W.

Survey data indicates peak winds reached 75 mph, with the tornado stretching 6.1 miles in length and up to 200 yards wide at its broadest point. The brief but damaging storm crossed W 700 N and Route 41, causing sporadic tree damage in its northeast track.

No injuries or fatalities were reported.

Emergency managers urge residents to review storm safety procedures as another round of severe weather is possible as early as Wednesday. The Morocco Volunteer Fire Department encouraged the public to remain alert and have shelter plans ready.

This event marks the latest in a string of early spring weather systems impacting northwest Indiana. Newton County typically sees fewer tornadoes than other Indiana regions, but officials stress that even low-rated storms like this EF-0 can cause dangerous conditions.
