SEYMOUR, Ind. – Water is already spilling into low-lying fields and creeping toward rural roads near Seymour as the East Fork White River holds at flood stage Monday afternoon. Drivers could encounter water-covered pavement through early Tuesday.
According to the National Weather Service in Indianapolis, a Flood Warning remains in effect for the East Fork White River at Seymour until early Tuesday afternoon. The river stood at 12.0 feet as of 11:45 a.m. EST Monday, which meets flood stage. Forecasters expect the river to crest at 12.1 feet this evening before dropping below flood stage shortly after midnight.
Minor flooding is impacting significant agricultural land, and some local roads near the river are seeing high water. Melting snow combined with up to an inch of recent rainfall pushed the river to flood stage.
Officials urge drivers to turn around when encountering flooded roads and never bypass barricades. Most flood-related deaths occur in vehicles. Additional updates are expected around 4 a.m. EST Tuesday as the river begins to recede, though isolated high water may linger into the morning hours.
