Valparaiso, Indiana – A high-impact winter storm is increasingly likely to affect northwestern Indiana from Wednesday, Jan. 14, through Friday, Jan. 17, bringing a strong risk of heavy snow, lake-effect enhancement, and dangerous travel conditions across the region.

According to the National Weather Service Weather Prediction Center, northwestern Indiana currently carries a greater than 60 percent probability for severe winter weather impacts, placing it among the highest-risk areas in the Midwest. The developing storm system is expected to move through the Great Lakes, with cold air pouring over Lake Michigan and significantly enhancing snowfall across lake-adjacent communities.

The most severe impacts are expected along Interstate 80/94, Interstate 90 (Indiana Toll Road), and U.S. Route 30, where periods of heavy snow, blowing snow, and sharply reduced visibility could lead to prolonged travel disruptions. Communities including Gary, Hammond, Portage, Valparaiso, Michigan City, and La Porte are especially vulnerable to lake-effect snow bands that may persist for several hours at a time.

Forecasters warn that snowfall rates could become intense at times, particularly overnight and during early morning hours, making road conditions deteriorate rapidly. Gusty winds may further contribute to drifting snow and near-whiteout conditions on exposed roadways and bridges.

Residents are urged to prepare now by adjusting travel plans, ensuring vehicles are winter-ready, and monitoring updates from INDOT. Travel along major freight corridors may be especially impacted if snow bands stall or intensify.

Forecast confidence remains high that northwestern Indiana will see meaningful winter storm impacts. Winter storm watches or warnings are likely to be issued as details on snowfall intensity, timing, and lake-effect placement become clearer later this week.
