Indianapolis, Indiana – A single rumble of thunder today is your signal to act immediately, as lightning can strike within 10 miles of storms across Indiana during the active spring and summer season.

According to the National Weather Service, lightning often strikes far beyond the heaviest rain, reaching areas where skies may still appear partly clear. Across Indiana, warm-season instability and moisture from the Midwest fuel frequent thunderstorms, especially during the afternoon and evening hours.

In Indianapolis, open areas like White River State Park, the Canal Walk, and stretches along I-65 and I-70 quickly become high-risk zones when storms develop nearby. In Fort Wayne, areas near Headwaters Park and I-69 see increased exposure, while Evansville faces similar risks along the Ohio River, Garvin Park, and the Lloyd Expressway, where open terrain and water proximity increase vulnerability.

Lightning kills about 20 people annually in the United States, with many more suffering long-term injuries including neurological damage, memory loss, and cardiac complications. Many incidents occur during outdoor sports, construction work, and water-related activities when thunder is ignored or storms appear distant.

If you hear thunder, you are already within striking distance. Move indoors immediately into a fully enclosed building or a hard-topped vehicle. Avoid open fields, tall isolated objects, and water. Wait at least 30 minutes after the last thunder before returning outside.

Storm chances will continue across Indiana through the season, with additional lightning alerts possible as conditions evolve.
