Fort Wayne, IN – Severe storms that swept across the Midwest on April 2 triggered eight confirmed tornadoes in Northern Indiana, Southern Michigan, and Northwest Ohio, making it the region’s most active tornado day since March 31, 2023.
According to the US National Weather Service Northern Indiana, the tornadoes touched down between 7:52 p.m. and 11:22 p.m. EDT. Locations impacted include Bourbon, Orland, and Salem in Indiana; Bethel in Michigan; and Van Wert and Dupont in Ohio. The strongest tornado, rated EF-2, struck Dupont, OH at 11:18 p.m., carving a 4.5-mile path and reaching a width of 375 yards.
The majority of tornadoes were rated EF-1, with wind speeds estimated between 86 and 110 mph. The longest-lasting tornado occurred in Bourbon, IN, traveling 17.9 miles before dissipating at 8:10 p.m. No fatalities have been reported as of Friday.
Residents across the tri-state area are urged to review emergency shelter plans and have NOAA weather radios on hand as spring severe weather season intensifies. Officials stress the importance of heeding all future tornado watches and warnings.
