La Porte, Indiana – Snow will begin stacking up by 1 a.m. Sunday, with lake effect bands poised to intensify Sunday night and create slick highways ahead of the Monday morning commute across northern Indiana and southwest Michigan.
According to the National Weather Service in Northern Indiana, a Winter Weather Advisory runs from 1 a.m. EST Sunday through 1 p.m. EST Monday for Northern and Southern La Porte County, St. Joseph County in Indiana, and Cass and Berrien counties in Michigan. Total snowfall between 3 and 5 inches is expected, with locally higher totals possible where persistent lake effect bands develop.
The first round of light snow arrives overnight, but more organized banding is expected Sunday evening into early Monday morning. That timing raises concerns for heavily traveled corridors including I-94, the Indiana Toll Road and U.S. 31. Blowing and drifting snow could reduce visibility and create uneven accumulations, especially in open areas near Lake Michigan.
Communities including Michigan City, South Bend, Niles and Benton Harbor may see fluctuating snowfall rates as bands shift. Road crews will monitor bridges and overpasses, which freeze first during steady snowfall.
Drivers should slow down, increase following distance and check road conditions by calling 511 before heading out. Snow showers may linger into midday Monday, and additional advisories could follow if lake bands persist.
