Indianapolis, Indiana – A colder, snow-favored weather pattern is becoming more likely across northern and central Indiana late next week, with increasing confidence that snow will be more common than rain between Jan 20 and Jan 26. While exact storm timing remains uncertain, the overall setup supports multiple chances for snowfall across the region.

According to the National Weather Service and the Climate Prediction Center, Indiana is included in an area with a 40 percent chance of above-normal precipitation during the 8–14 day period. At the same time, temperature trends increasingly support colder air holding across the Midwest, tipping the balance toward snow rather than rain for much of northern and central Indiana.

Northern Indiana, including South Bend, Elkhart, Fort Wayne, and areas near the Michigan border, appears especially favored for accumulating snow. Systems tracking through the Great Lakes could bring periods of steady snow, with colder air allowing snow to persist even during daytime hours at times.

Central Indiana, including Indianapolis, Lafayette, Kokomo, and Muncie, also shows a growing snow signal. While daytime temperatures may occasionally approach freezing, colder nighttime and early morning conditions could support accumulating snow, particularly if multiple systems move through in close succession.

Repeated snow chances could lead to slick and snow-covered roads along major corridors such as I-69, I-70, I-80/90, and U.S. Route 31. Travel impacts may increase if snow events overlap with morning and evening commutes.

Residents are encouraged to prepare for winter travel conditions, check vehicles and emergency kits, and monitor updated outlooks. Confidence will continue to improve as the period approaches, and additional winter weather advisories may be issued if the snow signal strengthens further heading into late January.
